Colossal Biosciences has announced the Colossal moa project as its next de-extinction focus, building on its mammoth and dire wolf work to restore species lost to human impact. Native to New Zealand and once among the largest birds in the world, the moa disappeared centuries ago. In collaboration with the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, Colossal is assembling complete moa genomes from ancient remains and applying advanced gene editing to bring the bird back. This Māori-led initiative blends frontier science with Indigenous knowledge, offering a model for rewilding ecosystems and reclaiming lost biodiversity. Each new project, including the Colossal’s moa revival, accelerates breakthroughs in conservation, species restoration, and ecosystem health. The moa’s return is not just a scientific goal — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when innovation and stewardship move forward together.
