Peter Nichols leads groundbreaking initiatives in lipid technology and marine oils, with a particular focus on health-benefitting omega-3 oils. His research spans the detailed characterization of fish-derived and novel microbial oils, as well as process development for their utilization in both human health and environmental applications.
As part of a CSIRO team, Peter played a pivotal role in developing novel land-plant sources of long-chain omega-3 oils. Over more than two decades, this project culminated in the commercialization of a new Australian canola variety, engineered using GM technology to produce long-chain omega-3 oils. The resulting products, Aquaterra and Nutriterra—licensed to Australian company Nufarm/Nuseed—are now used globally in aquafeeds and human nutrition.
Throughout his career, Peter’s work has driven innovation in the Australian marine oils industry, resulting in novel products such as wax ester, omega-3, and shark liver oils. His contributions have improved the utilization of national fisheries resources and wastes, while also supporting the development of new oilseed crops. His pioneering use of chemical (lipid) signatures has advanced studies in microbial ecology, environmental monitoring, food-chain analysis, and marine biotechnology.
Beyond research, Peter has made a significant impact in academia and collaboration. He has co-supervised and mentored 36 PhD students to graduation, with two more currently underway, and has facilitated national and international partnerships across his fields of expertise. His career reflects a strong commitment to applying science for industry, community, and global benefit.
