Dodo De-Extinction Moves Forward at Colossal

First pigeon PGC culture and gene-edited chicken surrogates chart a path to dodo eggs.

BY Moná Thomas

Colossal Biosciences announced a major avian advance: the first long-term culture of pigeon primordial germ cells and gene-edited chicken surrogates that won’t make their own germ cells. Together, these unlock a practical route to dodo-like eggs and outline a five-to-seven-year path to seeing the bird return. The team has established a Nicobar pigeon colony, expanded avian genetics work, and convened the Mauritius Dodo Advisory Committee to plan conservation and rewilding. In parallel, the colossal dire wolf initiative reports healthy growth and natural pack behaviors among its first wolves—evidence that platform technologies can power both restoration and modern conservation. These milestones position Colossal’s research to benefit living ecosystems.
