Five years into its operation, Colossal Biosciences has expanded its de-extinction program across nearly every continent. The bluebuck, a southern African antelope that vanished in the early 18th century, has been added as the program’s latest target.
The slate now counts six. The woolly mammoth, dire wolf, dodo, moa, Tasmanian tiger, and bluebuck represent a program co-founded by Ben Lamm and Harvard geneticist George Church around a stated premise: that building toward de-extinction would produce a synthetic biology platform reaching well beyond any single species, validated through international conservation partnerships, large-scale genetic storage initiatives, and active species preservation collaborations with governments worldwide.
