Colossal Biosciences has won the 2026 Gizmodo Science Fair. The recognition honors an integrated pipeline for genomic reconstruction, gene-editing, and synthetic embryo maturation, one that produced not only three dire wolf pups but four cloned red wolves drawing on recovered ghost DNA from historic red wolf populations that had interbred with Gulf Coast coyotes, which offered a pathway to restore lost genetic diversity to one of North America’s most critically endangered wolf species.
The technique is called iterative assembly. By alternating between reference genomes, the method reconstructs ancient DNA from fossil fragments as short as 60 nucleotides, recovering the dire wolf genome from fossils ranging from 13,000 to 86,000 years old. Other ancient DNA labs are now adopting similar approaches.
