Andrew Phipps, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrew Phipps is a photographer, cinematographer, fine art printer and picture framer, as well as a neuroscience Research Fellow and Lecturer in Dementia Studies at the University of Tasmania. He’s passionate about supporting environmental and community causes through his filmmaking, photography and research.

At the University’s Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, Andrew studies how diseases such as Alzheimer’s and motor neurone disease (MND) affect the brain, working to understand what makes nerve cells vulnerable and to help find new treatments. He completed his PhD in 2019 and now leads his own research projects while mentoring the next generation of scientists. Andrew is also an advocate for change and improved care for people with neurodegenerative disease in the community. He is a director on the board of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Tasmania, and a member representative for MND Australia.

In 2014, Andrew founded Eagle Eye Tasmania in Hobart, where he enjoys cinematic storytelling, landscape photography, fine art printing and framing. His deep appreciation for Tasmania’s stunning landscapes and natural environment continuously inspires his creative work, and he uses his photography and filmmaking to advocate for the environment, highlighting the importance of protecting Tasmania’s wilderness and dark skies. His work has been displayed in exhibitions and films across Australia. He works closely with a range of artists and photographers to support bringing their work to life in print and visual media.
